What is Abhyanga?
Abhyanga is one of the best-known traditional treatments in Ayurveda and is often described simply as an Ayurvedic oil massage. Yet this description only tells part of the story.
Traditionally, Abhyanga involves the application of warm oil to the body using flowing, rhythmic movements. The choice of oil, the temperature and the way the treatment is performed can vary according to the individual and the purpose of the treatment. In Ayurveda, oils are not regarded simply as massage products. They are carefully selected and may be prepared with herbs according to traditional Ayurvedic principles.
The Sanskrit word Sneha can refer both to oil and to qualities associated with affection and care – a beautiful indication of the place oil treatments have traditionally held within Ayurveda.
Abhyanga is commonly used as part of a wider Ayurvedic programme rather than as an isolated wellness massage. It may be incorporated into periods of rest and regeneration or used alongside other traditional treatments and dietary adjustments.
At DEVAYALIFE, Abhyanga is therefore never simply selected from a treatment menu. Whether it is appropriate, which oil is used and how it fits into the programme depend on the individual guest and the purpose of the stay.
The treatment itself is only one part of the experience. Time before and after it matters too. Rather than immediately returning to a busy schedule, guests are given the space to rest and allow the warmth and oil to remain part of the experience.
This is one of the reasons Abhyanga has remained such an important treatment within traditional Ayurveda: simple in appearance, yet deeply connected to the Ayurvedic understanding of individual care.
