What is Netra Tarpana?
Netra Tarpana is a traditional Ayurvedic treatment specifically associated with the eye area. Netra means eye, while Tarpana refers to nourishing or refreshing.
During the traditional treatment, a small protective boundary is carefully formed around the eyes using a soft dough preparation. Warm clarified butter, traditionally ghee, is then gently introduced within this boundary while the guest rests comfortably. The treatment is performed for a carefully determined period of time.
Netra Tarpana is quite different from the treatments most people first associate with Ayurveda. There is no massage of the whole body and no elaborate sequence of activities. It is a very focused traditional application and requires careful preparation and calm surroundings.
As with other Ayurvedic treatments, Netra Tarpana should not simply be selected because it sounds interesting or unusual. Whether and when it is appropriate needs to be considered within the individual's program.
At DEVAYALIFE, traditional treatments are not treated as a checklist of experiences that every guest should receive. Netra Tarpana may be incorporated when appropriate, while another guest may require an entirely different combination of treatments.
This is also why knowing the names of Ayurvedic treatments is useful, but only the beginning. Abhyanga, Shirodhara, Pinda Sveda or Netra Tarpana each describe a particular traditional attempt. Ayurveda begins to make sense when these treatments are understood as parts of a much larger and highly individual system.
